Design your Surfaces Using Fabric Scraps – Textile design

Textile Art – Creating Designed Surfaces  Using Fabric Scraps – Jamie Malden

Sometimes, after you’ve finished your designs, you can be left with some seemingly useless bits and bobs; things like thread or bits of fabric. This does not need to go to waste! Why not design your surfaces by turning the scraps into a masterpiece? You can put it on bags, notebooks and much more!

How to

All you need to do is take what you have left after a project, place them on your chosen canvas under a piece of organza and sew it down. There can be method to your madness or you can place your bits and bobs randomly. It really is up to you!

What we think of the surface designs

Embroidered stitches on top of this can create some beautiful textures and really bring the piece together. You can add flowers or follow the shapes of the underneath design. Whatever you think looks best.

Something really unique is turning your old scraps into wash bags! You can never have too many wash bags, they always come in handy. Just by adding some waterproof material to the inside you can create a vibrant, fun little piece which is very convenient and useful.

You would never have guessed that the fabric and thread was originally destined for the bin! It adds style and fun to your designs. Plus, it also saves a lot of waste! We like the colour aspect of it all. Plus, we love the idea that no two pieces will ever come out exactly same. You can really use this as a means to experiment with shapes, styles and colour.

What you need and Final Notes!

Lastly, we’d like to say we think it’s super easy and fun to create. All you need is some old scraps, some organza, a sewing machine and a little bit of a time!

Ribbon Embroidery Designs & Stitches on block printing

Ribbon Embroidery Designs & Stitches – Marilyn Pipe

Ribbon embroidery and other designs can really spruce up your work. Embroidered fabric alone looks savvy and beautiful but adding a bit of ribbon can really bring out more colour and levels to your design. By adding ribbon, the design becomes more unique. It adds dimensions especially looking at it from a side-on perspective. In the example above, you can see how the ribbon-made rose adds a 3D effect to the design. It also makes the embroidery look sophisticated and special. You can really make it your own with the little details.

Marilyn Pipe really shows how the little details can bring a design to life. The white compliments the stitching and flower design. The contrast between the colours against the background fabric makes the design look vibrant. You can try this yourself on a number of things. Why not try to creating the rose effect on a pair of gloves?

The stitching really creates the overall design. You can do anything from flowers to music notes to a city skyline. The possibilities are endless. What we love about this particular design is how fresh and complicated it looks while still being very achievable.

How to use Lutradur – Industrial material for Textile Art

What is Lutradur? Introduction to textile techniques with Jamie Malden

Lutradur is a multifunctional fabric perfect for textile art. Being the sturdy material it is, it not only can be used to make beautiful landscape pieces but also when burnt can be made into little boxes. I love the idea that you can make pretty lamp shades out of the material. You can really be creative.

The sunset acrylic dyes really bring lutradur to life. Plus you can use it to compliment other fabrics by adding shaped versions of it. You can turn the fabric into much more than just a fabric. It can become your starting piece for elaborate art. It reads well into motifs and can be structured to create images. For instance, why not try making a flower pattern?

Also, you can use the material for textiled backgrounds. Amazingly, the lampshades come out super creative and fun. They speak for themselves, have a look:

Visit Amazing Japan

Colouricious-Japan-creative-craft-tours

I don’t know if you saw it, but there was a wonderful series on ITV with Joanna Lumley exploring Japan. I believe it was a 3 or 4 part series airing on a Friday evening and I am sure you can catch up on any episodes you may have missed if you are interested. You can find more details about the show by visiting the ITV website.

Japan is a mystical, magical and exciting country as well as being technologically very advanced. We have never run a crafting holiday to Japan before, but when we were presented with the opportunity to change this, we jumped at the chance. The first holiday sold out in record time, (literally within 4 days of it going live on our website) so we decided to put on another trip for May 2017. This trip is already well over 70% full, but there are still a few spaces left for anybody that is interested, or maybe has watched Joanna Lumley’s experiences and decided that Japan is for me!

The spring time is the perfect season of the year to visit Japan with blossom out and everything looking so wonderful. We will be exploring Tokyo, Kyoto and Kanazawa where we will be sightseeing as well as participating in workshops and the world famous Japanese tea ceremony.

If you would like to join us on this super trip to such a beautiful country, please head over to our website where you will find the full itinerary and the booking form where you can reserve your place. Be one of the first intrepid Colouricious Club members who will be joining us on our inaugural visits to Japan.

host-of-angels-block-printing-300x300

Christmas is coming!

I know, I know, we are only just into October and the sun is still shining, but I have seen some Christmas adverts and the shopping channels are already mentioning it, so I don’t feel too bad about reminding you all that Christmas is not that far away. For us crafters, we have top be even more organised if we are going to produce home-crafted gifts and cards for our friends and family. I was talking with one of our club members who is already preparing her designs for gifts, and she told me about her 6 year old grandson who loves joining in with when when she block prints and is going to make gifts himself for all his teachers this year.

So, now we have all agreed that Christmas is on its way, what is the special offer?

Well, we thought we would give you the chance to combine our beautiful Christmas blocks with something you can print on and give as a gift. Buy any one of our Christmas Block sets and you will get a free tea towel to block print and create a lovely festive gift. The deal gets better though as if you buy two of the Christmas sets, you will get 3 free tea towels and buy three sets and get 5 free tea towels. No code or comment to make when you order, just choose your sets and we will do the rest.
1 Christmas Block Set – 1 Free Tea Towel
2 Christmas Block Sets – 3 Free Tea Towels
3 Christmas Block Sets – 5 Free Tea Towels

To see the choice of block sets for this offer you can visit our October Offer page.

It is a great deal and I am sure anybody who receives a hand printed tea towel will love it.
