Hosted by Jamie Malden – who will meet up with you at Heathrow airport and be with you the entire journey sorting your every need.

The most fabulous textile tour around Rajasthan, exploring the textiles, embroidery and block printing unique to this region,. We will be travelling in our own private coach to the edge of the Thar Desert and on the way visiting beautiful palaces, fabulous fabrics and visiting the amazing Udaipur.

atol_logo-150x150 Rajasthan India Textile Tour“Hello Jamie, well what can I say? The Rajasthan Textile tour was fantastic. My sister Sheila and I found the whole experience way beyond our expectations. Isha and all the guides looked after us so well. The coach driver and the young man with him could not have been more attentive, helpful and patient. The workshops were very enjoyable and a real eye opener into all the skills that abound in India, and we are grateful that the craftsmen and women were willing to spend their time teaching us. The hotels were well chosen, I think we would have liked another night at the Hotel Heritage Resort Bikaner as the rooms and grounds had such a wonderful ambience but we do understand that there was a schedule to stick to. I want to emphasise that we appreciated the welcome, the acceptance the friendliness that we met everywhere we went. I will email TWX to give feedback on Isha, of course. She made the tour extra special as nothing was too much trouble and nothing phased her. Thank you Colouricious for making our 2 weeks in Rajasthan so exceptional. Hope to see you again. Patricia & Sheila”

“I am writing to thank you for a brilliant holiday.  I was blown away by the care and brilliant planning of the tour, at every corner there was a surprise and it exceeded my expectations completely.  The tour guides were wonderful, as were the hotels and all the artisans and their families.  I would advise everyone interested in textiles to do this tour, which also contained such additions like participating in Diwali, visiting temples/ mosques, palaces and an oasis, not to mention the camel fair and so much more.“. Julie

“The tour was ab -so -lute l-y fab -u l-ous !!  The itinerary lived up to expectations, with the visits to the printing and dyeing and weaving factories and workshops, plus the visits to the individual artists homes and studios. We really enjoyed getting right into the local community, and meeting local people and children who are not used to seeing many Europeans! We were impressed by your choice of hotels and lunch stops, and arriving at the next hotel or restaurant was always an exciting and refreshing part of the day! I had been especially looking forward to the Balsamand lake hotel, but the beautiful new hotel and gardens at Jodhpur more than made up for it. Similarly, two of the new hotels where we stopped for lunch were absolutely stunning, both like modern oases in the desert!  The historic Fort Pokaran was a great experience, especially with so many visitors for the Diwali public holiday. We were allocated the Queen,s suite of rooms, a complete surprise!
Two days at each hotel works well, you have the chance to get your new room organised and find your way around the hotel. The travel days were always interesting, there is always so much to see from the window, everything is happening by the roadside! The driver was excellent, and we were delighted that we were regularly supplied with water, crisps and bananas. As a small group we enjoyed getting to know each other and making sure that everyone felt included, and that the three older ones had any assistance they needed. We were all particularly impressed with Isha and Gautam, they both pitched it just right! They were both well organised and informative, and we felt  able to relax and enjoy the unfolding adventure! What an experience it turned out to be, could  not have been better! That is what we have been telling family and friends, and recommending Colouricious!
We made our first trip to India last summer independently, and unfortunately both got a bug and needed to see a doctor, then I had more problems over the summer, needing more antibiotics. I was somewhat apprehensive about returning in again, but am so glad we did, as it was a complete holiday, and we now feel confident that we can do India and be OK. In fact no one in the group had any problems, presumably due to your carefully researched venues. Many thanks for having put together such a well thought out package ”    Fran & Madan

Puppets – puppet making in India – creative craft holiday

Indian-Colour-051-150x150 Rajasthan India Textile TourRajasthan-Textile-Tour-300x239 Rajasthan India Textile TourI enjoyed the trip immensely:  it was the best group I’ve ever travelled with (by the way, it was so nice to hear English spoken and spelled, rather than the American version).   Isha was very efficient, professional and a delight to be with, and Gautam our guide was outstanding.
The hotels were fine – especially Fort Pokoran – I really do love boutique hotels and that was amazing – some of us had the queen’s apartments, and mine was straight out of the Arabian Nights.   Glamping at Pushkar, of course, was an experience, and can hardly be rated as a hotel!
The workshops were fun;  it was the first time that I’ve block printed anything that I felt pleased with.
All in all, I had a very good time, thank you for organising it.” Merrill

I was speechless from day one (not true I had a lot to say) the sights the sounds and smells and nor forgetting the company of the group all of whom shared a common interest . Oh dear, it was all amazing and also life changing in so many ways, thank you all for your superb organisation and sharing your love of textiles and India……………….I will be back ” Linda

“I enjoyed the trip immensely:  it was the best group I’ve ever travelled with.  Isha was very efficient, professional and a delight to be with, and Gautam was outstanding.  I knew when I signed up that two nights in each place would be tough, I much prefer to spend three.   We spent so much time on the bus that there was very little time left to just BE in a place and explore and meet people.   The hook was that I REALLY wanted to go to Pushkar.   I think everybody was finding the packing and unpacking hard going.
The hotels were fine – especially Fort Pokoran – I really do love boutique hotels and that was amazing – some of us had thequilting-arts-textile-holiday-300x191 Rajasthan India Textile Tour queen’s apartments, and mine was straight out of the Arabian Nights.   Glamping at Pushkar, of course, was an experience, and can hardly be rated as a hotel!
The workshops were fun;  it was the first time that I’ve block printed anything that I felt pleased with.   There were wonderful examples of repurposed old embroidery. All in all, I had a very good time, thank you for organising it” … Merrill October 2015

Spending Money

Many of the places we go only take cash. India is largely a cash society. ATMs are widely available. You can use your regular debit card to take cash out of ATMs but many banks charge a hefty fee for each transaction & their exchange rates may not be so competitive. Or you can carry travellers cheques but these are not so flexible & getting to a bank during opening hours may be a problem in the more remote regions or during one of the many festivals that India seems to enjoy. Ultimately though it is your choice. Further advice may be obtained from the UK Government.

1. Will there be time for us to explore the villages where we stay?  E.g., time for shopping and browsing by ourselves.

There will be plenty of time to explore the villages as we go along. Built into the itinerary is free time and shopping time

2. Will there be someone to meet us at the airport, and where would we stay in New Delhi?  Could we arrive a couple of days before the tour begins and could we stay in the proposed hotel for those days before the tour?  I had a difficult time with the heat in 2013 so a couple of days to acclimate would save me losing those days on the tour itself.

There will be a Colouricious tour guide to meet you in Delhi, at the airport and transfer the group to the hotel. If you are travelling independently, you can decide when you want to arrive in Delhi and we will tell you which hotel and what time to meet the group.

3. How much time travelling on the road (it’s very bumpy as we know and can be very uncomfortable), and can you make accommodations for two travellers who get travel sickness, i.e., would we be able to sit near or at the front of the bus?

It is hard to say how many hours there are travelling each day but we do plan the time so that there are regular breaks. You can sit where you like on the coach, which is air conditioned and modern

4. Could you tell me how many tours of this type you have done before?  Are there testimonials we can read?  Is the same person in charge of each tour?

Colouricious has managed several hundred guests over the last five years – we tend to have the same guide but due to personal circumstances that may of course change.

5. The palace hotels look wonderful, but what type of accommodation is there for nights when we won’t be staying in palace hotels?

All the hotels that are on this tour are great standard and quality. Our guests always are thrilled with the good standard of accomodation and food.

6. How large is the group and are they all/mostly women?

The maximum size is 25 people and we mostly have woman although we do sometimes have the occasional male guest

7. Could you give me the names and email addresses of some people who have been on this tour before?  From the pictures they all looked delightful and I’d be eager to hear their personal comments.

We are not at liberty to  issue names and emails of previous guests but rest assured only lovely people seem to be attracted to Colouricious textile holidays!

Have a look at some wonderful images of our textile holidays – the people, the places, the smells, the colours, the culture and the life that we want to share with you first hand.

“I have recently returned from a visit to India with Jamie M.  It was my second visit of the year, last November I joined the group touring Rajastan and this month Odisha.  Over the last 50 years I have travelled the world both independently and with organised groups  – Borneo, Japan, Kenya, Peru and Malawi being  some of the highlights.  A friend asked me  what makes the Colouricious tours so special, why do they stand out from the rest and why do you go back?  Was it the choice of the Indian location, the textile art /craft theme  or the excellent value for money? Was it  the attention to details such as travel arrangements,  interesting heritage hotels, the food or the individual care you receive.  Most of the top travel  companies usually get these things right particularly if you pay top prices.  So why is Colouriscious different?

Colouricious holidays are excellent tours in the sense you are taken to some of the most interesting, beautiful places you will ever visit. They are tours in the sense that the local guide will have given you enough information to help you understand the significance of what you are seeing. A quality tour for me is never about seeing the attractions or even  looking at how people live,  it is about the personal, interaction with people in their own environments.

With Coloricious it is as though you have been given this massive privilege of stepping into another world.b It  is about things that happen to just you and provide  memories that will stay with you forever. You feel so privileged.  Everyday offers  unique experiences that made you  feel as if you have entered a community, not as a tourist  but just as the person you are and you leave having been touched in some way. Over  dinner at the end of a day when you swop stories you realise you  may well have been the only one taken by a young girl to show you her rice wall paintings but someone else was shown a villager’s vegetable plot , or was dressed in a sari, or taken to visit grandma or a new baby. The experiences are endless. Each person feels as though they had their own special moment.  Colouriscious  is the only tour holiday I have been on that offers this level of experience on a daily basis.” Love Denise

“In short, this was an incredible tour!  The organization was spot-on, we felt extremely well taken care of, and unexpected eventualities were handled by Isha with speed, grace, and calm. The structure of the tour (specifically, having two nights in most places) was most welcome and reduced as much as possible the stress of living out of a suitcase.  Having drinking water taken care of for us (rather than having constantly to pay for bottled water and worry about where it might come from) was SO much appreciated (and was a contrast to our last tour).
The textiles-activities were well organized and on the whole were a lot of fun.  There were no shortages of options to buy fabric, which I also appreciated! The hotels we stayed in were lovely!  The food was generally quite good — the two exceptions were at the fort at Pokaner (sp?) (this food was really not very good at all) and during glamping (where the food was actually tasty but consistently cold because the staff couldn’t figure out how to properly work the heating plates).  However, we were camping, so I wasn’t very bothered. 🙂
What made this trip so meaningful and joyful, though, was definitely the staff who came with us throughout the trip.  Specifically:
Gautam was an amazingly knowledgable escort, and he was attentive to everyone on the trip simultaneously in terms of calling attention to things he thought might be interesting (e.g.: I’m an amateur photographer, and he took the time to point out scenes and buildings and angles that might make good photographs).  He was also compassionate and kind, taking good care of some of the more elderly people on the trip who needed it.
Isha is an incredible find.  She managed to keep us all on track with humour and smiles, getting us where we needed to be with a minimum of fuss.  She took in stride unexpected events (such as our lunch restaurant being closed near the embellishment market in Delhi), and she was sensitive to the desires and needs of the people on the tour, going an extra mile or ten to provide people with the individual experience they were looking for.  On a personal front, Isha also looked out for my mum (who was a bit unexpectedly unsteady on her feet throughout), again with no fuss and an abundance of charm.  I can’t say enough positive things about Isha – I would be delighted to see her again on a tour, and I can’t commend highly enough her professional, competent, and delightful performance.  I have the greatest respect for her, compounded by her relative youth!
If this is the quality of staff and tours that Colouricious provides, then it’s no wonder you get repeat travelers. :)Thank you! “Amanda J.
