From Jacqui … “Both Sheila and I had a wonderful adventure with you and everyone on the trip, we saw and visited some remote and wonderful places, learnt a lot, not just about Sari weaving and weavers way of life, but also how people with so little can produce such a lot of fantastic stuff! It was a wonderful, colourful (in more ways than one) friendly, well organised experience, Sheila and I can’t wait for our next adventure with you!!Jamie-Malden-Colouricious-Textile-Holidays

From Jan … “About the trip.. It was so well planned and facilitated that nothing could be improved. We were cosseted with water, bananas and hand cleanser at every turn. The visits to outlying villages were eye opening in a positive way. The workshops were well prepared and easily followed, even if our results were not perfect! The Indian staff included a tour guide, a lecturer, a driver plus his assistant were all friendly and efficient. I would go again tomorrow. Thank you.”

NB. All our tours require a minimum number of 6 passengers to go ahead. In the unlikely event there are insufficient numbers for the tour to proceed all monies paid will be refunded in full.

The bottom layer is spread on the floor and ironed. A second layer of soft white cloth is spread on top of it. A third layer of fabric is spread on top and all the three layers are secured together by long running stiches. Thread colours are selected for the quilting work and this is followed by embroidery work. Once the embroidery work is finished, the extra fabric is cut off from the sides to get a straight edge and a piping in matching colour is stitched along the edge for the finish and the label is added. The Kanthas are washed and ironed and are ready.

Macrame is a form of textile-making using knotting rather than weaving or knitting. Its primary knots are the square knot and forms of “hitching”: full hitch and double half hitches. It was long crafted by sailors, especially in elaborate or ornamental knotting forms, to decorate anything from knife handles to bottles to parts of ships. This macramé craft has been adopted from a foreign culture and has become an important craft in Birbhum since the part few decades. It provides a mean of livelihood to many villagers.

Lunch will be on direct payment basis at the Hotel in Shantiniketan. Afternoon, participate in Batik workshop. The word batik actually means ‘wax writing ‘. It is a way of decorating fabric by covering a part of it with a coat of wax and then dyeing the fabric. The waxed areas keep their original colour and when the wax is removed the contrast between the dyed and non dyed areas makes the pattern. The crackle effect of batik is the most fascinating part which makes it unique. This results when the cooled wax is cracked to allow the dye to penetrate in the final dye bath.

Today, you will visit local Baluchari sari weavers and see their working pattern. Their silk-on-silk embroidered textiles and garments are sought after by women all over India as a high end fashion item. Packed lunch will be arranged on direct payment basis. Stay overnight at Hotel in Shantiniketan. They carve intricate blowing shells and bracelets out of conch shell. The bracelets, which are often inlaid with red lac or gold, symbolize in West Bengal that the wearer is married. Generally, it requires more than a month of hard labour to design and style a conch shell and is clearly a costly item. Also, witness the beautiful art of Terracotta work, which again are characteristic of Bishnupur. The most famous of the terracotta products are the handmade jars, disks, jewellery, horses, elephants, Ganesha and Nataraja. The potters here derive their inspiration from the history of kings, soldiers and wars

After partition of India, many skilled weavers of Dhaka came and settled in West Bengal around Shantipur and Phulia in Nadia district, both traditionally renowned centres for hand-woven fabrics. textile tour india – west bengal kantha stitch

Hi Jamie, thank you for an amazing tour.
Isha our tour guide – the Colouricious Representative  –  during our tour she was both efficient and resourceful in spite of setbacks with traffic and a strike. She was also friendly, helpful, and generous with her time, advice and also her belongings. We could not ask for anyone better.
About the trip.. Thank you, Jamie

Kantha Embroidery Stitch – Colouricious Textile Holiday

When we arrive at Heathrow, is there a meeting point for us to gather at a certain time?
About a week prior to departure, we will let you know exactly what time to meet up at the airport, and at which check in desk.

Will there be any laundry service/facilities to wash our ‘smalls’ out at the hotels we will be staying in?
There is normally a small laundry service available at some point to catch up with smalls

Do we need clothing to change for dinner?
We do not generally dress smartly for dinner – the luggage allowance does not really permit the luxury of superfluous clothing.

Please could you give us an idea on clothing and footwear needed and what sort of temperature will it be?
Wear cool comfortable clothing – light summer dresses, capri shorts and short sleeved blouses. Dress as if it were a lovely summer day in England! It is important to cover the shoulders and the knees as many places where we visit are roads less travelled and we do not wish of offend the locals!
I generally wear open toe sandals and perhaps travel in trainers.
Do we need to take any anti-malaria tablets? I have had conflicting advice.
Malaria. We are not qualified to give medical advice & you should seek the advice of your own medical professional. However, I can tell you what Jamie & I did last year & what Jamie will be doing on this trip.   Our thinking is : A large part of this trip will be in what is indicated as malaria risk area.  Whilst malaria is a year round problem, it is of particular concern during the wet season we are not travelling in the wet season. The best way to avoid malaria is not to get bitten.  Stay covered up of an evening, avoid standing water where possible, wear eau de bug perfume, take bug spray for your room (not necessary but some people like to do this) . Personally Jamie will not be taking anti-malarial’s.
