pink-pouch-bag-300x300   circle-bag-1-300x300

We have added several new products to our latest arrivals section of the website this week. We were lucky enough to get our team of crafters in India to make these lovely bags in India on our last trip and they have just arrived and we wanted to get them up on the site as quickly as possible.

The pouch bags come in 5 different colours and are absolutely perfect for block printing. (More on that a little later.) The larger shoulder bags are incredibly versatile and big enough to carry all sorts of things. I use one to keep all of my different pieces of material that I have dyed and are ready to be block printed. It is very convenient to have them all in one place and it seems as if the bag was designed for exactly this purpose.

If you are interested in either of these bags then just click on the images and you will be sent directly to our website where you can make your purchase.

Tutorial

The question I get asked the most when I go to exhibition and shows is please can you show me things we can make and decorate using these lovely wooden printing blocks. In an effort to get some creative juices flowing for you, I have recorded a video showing you how I decorate one of the new pouch bags we have on our website. The video goes from the very start, outlining all of the items I use, the paint, the tray, the mat, the blocks and the bag, right through to the cleaning up process at the end of the project. Please click on the video below to watch it and I would love for you to leave me a comment or maybe a suggestion for what the next tutorial should be about. I would love to hear from you.

My Favourites

I am often asked at shows for ideas for crafting projects and also what my favourite blocks are. I have never had the time to count up all the different blocks that I have had made by our carvers in India, but it will definitely go into the thousands. My favourite blocks change with different seasons and also with the different styles that have come and gone in crafting, but I have now created a section in our shop that show you my current favourite blocks. In truth, I love all the blocks I have made. I have designed them myself and love to see how the carvers have interpreted what I have asked for. But there are some blocks that I think are truly lovely and are beautiful to use and I have put them into a special section on my website.

If you would like to see my favourites, then click the button and take a look.

Mysterious Bhutan

Bhutan

As intrepid explorers, we first went to Bhutan last year with a group of about 16 people. Bhutan is an incredibly secretive place, who strictly limits visitors. Not surprisingly, given that it was a new holiday for us, the tour sold out in record time. It was a really super trip and I know everybody that went had the holiday of a lifetime with memories that will be passed on to families and friends.

You can tell by the testimonials below what everybody thought about this fantastic trip.

‘Bhutan is a magical experience which lingers on many levels. It is impossible to experience the country and its fabrics without embracing it’s natural beauty and pervasive culture.
Buddhism captures you with its stories, images, traditions & festivals and on a day to day level you absorb something of its influence. Everything is imbued with meaning and intrigue… Having Delhi in parenthesis, acted as a wonderful buffer and contrast to the main trip and gave us the opportunity to fly over the Himalayas, in & out of Bhutan; capturing Everest and the snowcapped mountain ranges at their best was definitely a bonus.
All in all a memorable trip and shopping experience!’

If these testimonials have whetted your appetite, then watch the video below. It is a truly amazing story and one that seems to sum up Bhutan.

Colouricious Holidays

Colouricious Holidays

We are constantly adding to the wonderful holidays that Colouricious are planning. Our holidays are very popular and the people who join us are always keen to let us know how much they have enjoyed their trip with us. Many also book to go with us on other trips as they expand their horizons of where to travel to.

We have a spectacular trip organised to Gujarat in October this year. In this 13 day trip you will get to explore the Gujarati region of India taking in sights and sounds as well as visiting workshops and seeing how the villagers design and create their beautiful textiles.

The region of Gujarat is also the home of the world famous Kite Festival of Uttarayan. Made famous in books such as The Kite Runner, The Kite Festival is a uniquely Gujarati phenomenon, when the skies over most cities of the state fill with kites from before dawn until well after dark. The festival marks the days in the Hindu calendar when winter begins turning to summer, known as Makar Sankranti or Uttarayan. On what is usually a bright warm sunny day with brisk breezes to lift the kites aloft, across the state almost all normal activity is shut down and everyone takes to the rooftops and roadways to fly kites and compete with their neighbors. We will be able to see the start of the Kite production in the streets of Ahmedabad.

If you would like to join us on this fantastic trip, then head over to our website and reserve your place.

It is sharing in a twin room, so if you would like to grab the last space on what will be a spectacular trip where you will literally be able to see the top of the word, then go to our website and reserve the last spot. This really will be first come first served as there are no spaces left once this one has been taken.

Use Transfer Foils in your next project

Transfer Foils can bring something new.

Transfer Foils

Transfer Foils can bring a metallic or holographic pattern to your crafting projects when you use them. They can be used to accent and highlight your existing design and really make it unique.

One of my favourite colleagues is Kim Thittichai – she is excellent in her use of transfer foils and you can watch a very fab video here where she uses the transfer foils to make a beautiful t-shirt. The transfer foil works perfectly with a sheet of hot spots to get the foil securely transferred on to the fabric.

Arts and Crafts

Arts and Crafts – ideas and inspiration for your scrapbooking and textile projects – learn mono printing with gelli plates

Learn about Monoprinting
A different way you use your wooden blocks

Gelli plates are a wonderful way of mono printing fabric and papers. What is a gelli plate you may be asking yourself? Essentially a gelli plate is a thin slab of soft squidgy silicone type material. When you watch the inspirational vidieos on how easy it is to use gelli plates, you will learn how to apply the paint (always with a brayer aka roller to get a thin layer of paint)
Watch and learn how to use a gelli plate
The ideas are endless and very exciting. However, as block printers we love to press our wooden printing blocks onto the gelli plate to get a reverse affect and then create another layer on top with a positive affect. If you are looking for a different way to use your wooden printing blocks then pressing them onto a gelli plate may  just be the thing for you.

The latest gelli plates on the market are the round gelli plates. Watch the videos of what you can create with the round gelli plates remembering that whatever is shown on paper you can replicate onto fabric – remembering to use Colouricious fabric paint for a lasting permanent result. These paints are a professional quality that apply well, mix together happily and have a very long shelf life.

You can spend hours mono printing stashes of papers using found objects. Get the young people in your life to hunt around the house for textures that work well with gelli mono printing.

recycling papers and fabrics works fabulously with mono printing – experiment and play using newspapers, tissues papers, wall papers, brown wrapping  papers – then use them to make your own wrapping papers, tags and cards for birthdays, anniversaries and even Christmas!
There is a wide selection of gelli plates … click on each link and you can watch even more instructional videos on this creative mono printing technique.
