Visit Amazing Japan

Colouricious-Japan-creative-craft-tours-300x213 Some Lovely Gift Ideas

I don’t know if you saw it, but there was a wonderful series on ITV with Joanna Lumley exploring Japan. I believe it was a 3 or 4 part series airing on a Friday evening and I am sure you can catch up on any episodes you may have missed if you are interested. You can find more details about the show by visiting the ITV website.

Japan is a mystical, magical and exciting country as well as being technologically very advanced. We have never run a crafting holiday to Japan before, but when we were presented with the opportunity to change this, we jumped at the chance. The first holiday sold out in record time, (literally within 4 days of it going live on our website) so we decided to put on another trip for May 2017. This trip is already well over 70% full, but there are still a few spaces left for anybody that is interested, or maybe has watched Joanna Lumley’s experiences and decided that Japan is for me!

The spring time is the perfect season of the year to visit Japan with blossom out and everything looking so wonderful. We will be exploring Tokyo, Kyoto and Kanazawa where we will be sightseeing as well as participating in workshops and the world famous Japanese tea ceremony.

If you would like to join us on this super trip to such a beautiful country, please head over to our website where you will find the full itinerary and the booking form where you can reserve your place. Be one of the first intrepid Colouricious Club members who will be joining us on our inaugural visits to Japan.

Our February Course is now full!

As we expected, our Printology Workshop proved to be very popular and we filled the February course in just over 1 month. We sort of guessed that this would be the case which is why we have already organised a second workshop for October next year.

The second course is going to run from 26th – 29th October 2017 and we are now taking deposits so you can reserve your place on the workshop. If you want a place on the October workshop act quickly to grab your space.

Come and See me at a Quilt Show

We have a couple of tickets left for the West Country Quilt & Textile Show. The tickets are for Sunday 13th November and the show is at the University of the West of England Exhibition Centre. We also have some free tickets for the Dublin Knitting and Stitching Show as well, which is at the end of this month

If you would like a ticket for either of these shows all you need to do is purchase anything from our website and add a line in the note box that you would like a ticket and we will send it out with the items you purchased. I am afraid this will have to be a first come, first served offer, so they are gone the offer will be over. If you are one of the lucky ones though, I look forward to seeing you there!

October Deal of the Month

host-of-angels-block-printing-300x300 Some Lovely Gift Ideas

Christmas is coming!

I know, I know, we are only just into October and the sun is still shining, but I have seen some Christmas adverts and the shopping channels are already mentioning it, so I don’t feel too bad about reminding you all that Christmas is not that far away. For us crafters, we have top be even more organised if we are going to produce home-crafted gifts and cards for our friends and family. I was talking with one of our club members who is already preparing her designs for gifts, and she told me about her 6 year old grandson who loves joining in with when when she block prints and is going to make gifts himself for all his teachers this year.

So, now we have all agreed that Christmas is on its way, what is the special offer?

Well, we thought we would give you the chance to combine our beautiful Christmas blocks with something you can print on and give as a gift. Buy any one of our Christmas Block sets and you will get a free tea towel to block print and create a lovely festive gift. The deal gets better though as if you buy two of the Christmas sets, you will get 3 free tea towels and buy three sets and get 5 free tea towels. No code or comment to make when you order, just choose your sets and we will do the rest.
1 Christmas Block Set – 1 Free Tea Towel
2 Christmas Block Sets – 3 Free Tea Towels
3 Christmas Block Sets – 5 Free Tea Towels

To see the choice of block sets for this offer you can visit our October Offer page.

It is a great deal and I am sure anybody who receives a hand printed tea towel will love it.

Vietnam Textiles

Vietnam Textiles

There are many artistic avenues through which the Vietnamese express themselves such as silk painting, theatre, and wood carving. Below are explanations of the origins and development of a few key textiles and techniques. Vietnam textiles are beautiful.

Silk

silk_weaving_hadong_village_hanoi_t-300x225 Vietnam TextilesVietnam textiles have been amazing for centuries, Vietnam has been silk weaving and creating beautiful embroidery. During feudal times silk was thought of as a great luxury, only worn by kings, queens and mandarins. Through out history and its dynasties, Vietnam has always had rules concerning colour, ornamentation, style and fabric of clothes worn by aristocrats. The clothes of those in power featured the royal symbols of dragons, phoenixes and tortoises.

Vietnam’s best silk is called ‘Ha Dong’ silk and comes from of Ha Tay, southwest of Hanoi in the Red River Delta. It is believed that the art of silk weaving originated here some 2,000 years ago. However it was between the 16th 18th centuries when this region’s silk industry flourished. Today, techniques and quality have changed but there are many villages that always have and still do produce silk, for example La Ca.

To produce silk, the first stage is the weaving of the cloth to make every thread uniformly in line to ensure a smooth and soft fabric. It is then soaked, washed, dried, kept with forest resin, dyed, and sun dried twice. The resin is extracted at different points of the season for different colours. This chemical free process creates beautifully shiny and durable silk.

Embroidery

tumblr_loyf3mIxlW1qj3xy3o1_500.png-232x300 Vietnam Textiles

All over Vietnam, its people use embroidery as a form of cultural expression. It was introduced into the northprovinces of Vietnam during the 17th century from China, when originally silk embroidery only used five thread colours – yellow, red, green, violet and blue.

However embroidery is thought to have existed in the village of Van Lam for seven centuries. More than 75% of the population is skilled in the embroidery with lace, due to teachings being passed down through generations. Their work varies from the size of a hand to large wall hangings. Tribes like the Hmong and Dao also use their own unique intricate embroidery and braiding styles to embellish their clothing. The Hmong also use beautiful batik designs to decorate their clothing.

Applique

Applique is used by the Hmong to set apart and identify particular tribes, but was first developed as a way of story telling. Now it has developed into an art form for many communities. This ancient technique involves sewing on fabric shapes by hand to produce decorative patterns and shapes.

If you’d like to find out more about these techniques and get involved in the culture, Colouricious are running a textile trip to Vietnam in November 2015. If you would like to find out more, do not hesitate to visit our website or contact us below.

Learn about Monoprinting
A different way you use your wooden blocks

Gelli plates are a wonderful way of mono printing fabric and papers. What is a gelli plate you may be asking yourself? Essentially a gelli plate is a thin slab of soft squidgy silicone type material. When you watch the inspirational vidieos on how easy it is to use gelli plates, you will learn how to apply the paint (always with a brayer aka roller to get a thin layer of paint)
Watch and learn how to use a gelli plate

The ideas are endless and very exciting. However, as block printers we love to press our wooden printing blocks onto the gelli plate to get a reverse affect and then create another layer on top with a positive affect. If you are looking for a different way to use your wooden printing blocks then pressing them onto a gelli plate may  just be the thing for you.

The latest gelli plates on the market are the round gelli plates. Watch the videos of what you can create with the round gelli plates remembering that whatever is shown on paper you can replicate onto fabric – remembering to use Colouricious fabric paint for a lasting permanent result. These paints are a professional quality that apply well, mix together happily and have a very long shelf life.

You can spend hours mono printing stashes of papers using found objects. Get the young people in your life to hunt around the house for textures that work well with gelli mono printing.

recycling papers and fabrics works fabulously with mono printing – experiment and play using newspapers, tissues papers, wall papers, brown wrapping  papers – then use them to make your own wrapping papers, tags and cards for birthdays, anniversaries and even Christmas!
