pink-pouch-bag-300x300   circle-bag-1-300x300

We have added several new products to our latest arrivals section of the website this week. We were lucky enough to get our team of crafters in India to make these lovely bags in India on our last trip and they have just arrived and we wanted to get them up on the site as quickly as possible.

The pouch bags come in 5 different colours and are absolutely perfect for block printing. (More on that a little later.) The larger shoulder bags are incredibly versatile and big enough to carry all sorts of things. I use one to keep all of my different pieces of material that I have dyed and are ready to be block printed. It is very convenient to have them all in one place and it seems as if the bag was designed for exactly this purpose.

If you are interested in either of these bags then just click on the images and you will be sent directly to our website where you can make your purchase.

Tutorial

The question I get asked the most when I go to exhibition and shows is please can you show me things we can make and decorate using these lovely wooden printing blocks. In an effort to get some creative juices flowing for you, I have recorded a video showing you how I decorate one of the new pouch bags we have on our website. The video goes from the very start, outlining all of the items I use, the paint, the tray, the mat, the blocks and the bag, right through to the cleaning up process at the end of the project. Please click on the video below to watch it and I would love for you to leave me a comment or maybe a suggestion for what the next tutorial should be about. I would love to hear from you.

My Favourites

I am often asked at shows for ideas for crafting projects and also what my favourite blocks are. I have never had the time to count up all the different blocks that I have had made by our carvers in India, but it will definitely go into the thousands. My favourite blocks change with different seasons and also with the different styles that have come and gone in crafting, but I have now created a section in our shop that show you my current favourite blocks. In truth, I love all the blocks I have made. I have designed them myself and love to see how the carvers have interpreted what I have asked for. But there are some blocks that I think are truly lovely and are beautiful to use and I have put them into a special section on my website.

If you would like to see my favourites, then click the button and take a look.

Mysterious Bhutan

Bhutan

As intrepid explorers, we first went to Bhutan last year with a group of about 16 people. Bhutan is an incredibly secretive place, who strictly limits visitors. Not surprisingly, given that it was a new holiday for us, the tour sold out in record time. It was a really super trip and I know everybody that went had the holiday of a lifetime with memories that will be passed on to families and friends.

You can tell by the testimonials below what everybody thought about this fantastic trip.

‘Bhutan is a magical experience which lingers on many levels. It is impossible to experience the country and its fabrics without embracing it’s natural beauty and pervasive culture.
Buddhism captures you with its stories, images, traditions & festivals and on a day to day level you absorb something of its influence. Everything is imbued with meaning and intrigue… Having Delhi in parenthesis, acted as a wonderful buffer and contrast to the main trip and gave us the opportunity to fly over the Himalayas, in & out of Bhutan; capturing Everest and the snowcapped mountain ranges at their best was definitely a bonus.
All in all a memorable trip and shopping experience!’

If these testimonials have whetted your appetite, then watch the video below. It is a truly amazing story and one that seems to sum up Bhutan.

Colouricious Holidays

Colouricious Holidays

We are constantly adding to the wonderful holidays that Colouricious are planning. Our holidays are very popular and the people who join us are always keen to let us know how much they have enjoyed their trip with us. Many also book to go with us on other trips as they expand their horizons of where to travel to.

We have a spectacular trip organised to Gujarat in October this year. In this 13 day trip you will get to explore the Gujarati region of India taking in sights and sounds as well as visiting workshops and seeing how the villagers design and create their beautiful textiles.

The region of Gujarat is also the home of the world famous Kite Festival of Uttarayan. Made famous in books such as The Kite Runner, The Kite Festival is a uniquely Gujarati phenomenon, when the skies over most cities of the state fill with kites from before dawn until well after dark. The festival marks the days in the Hindu calendar when winter begins turning to summer, known as Makar Sankranti or Uttarayan. On what is usually a bright warm sunny day with brisk breezes to lift the kites aloft, across the state almost all normal activity is shut down and everyone takes to the rooftops and roadways to fly kites and compete with their neighbors. We will be able to see the start of the Kite production in the streets of Ahmedabad.

If you would like to join us on this fantastic trip, then head over to our website and reserve your place.

It is sharing in a twin room, so if you would like to grab the last space on what will be a spectacular trip where you will literally be able to see the top of the word, then go to our website and reserve the last spot. This really will be first come first served as there are no spaces left once this one has been taken.

Vietnam Textiles

Vietnam Textiles

There are many artistic avenues through which the Vietnamese express themselves such as silk painting, theatre, and wood carving. Below are explanations of the origins and development of a few key textiles and techniques. Vietnam textiles are beautiful.

Silk

silk-weaving-hadong-vietnam Vietnam textiles have been amazing for centuries, Vietnam has been silk weaving and creating beautiful embroidery. During feudal times silk was thought of as a great luxury, only worn by kings, queens and mandarins. Through out history and its dynasties, Vietnam has always had rules concerning colour, ornamentation, style and fabric of clothes worn by aristocrats. The clothes of those in power featured the royal symbols of dragons, phoenixes and tortoises.

Vietnam’s best silk is called ‘Ha Dong’ silk and comes from of Ha Tay, southwest of Hanoi in the Red River Delta. It is believed that the art of silk weaving originated here some 2,000 years ago. However it was between the 16th 18th centuries when this region’s silk industry flourished. Today, techniques and quality have changed but there are many villages that always have and still do produce silk, for example La Ca.

To produce silk, the first stage is the weaving of the cloth to make every thread uniformly in line to ensure a smooth and soft fabric. It is then soaked, washed, dried, kept with forest resin, dyed, and sun dried twice. The resin is extracted at different points of the season for different colours. This chemical free process creates beautifully shiny and durable silk.

Embroidery

vietnam-embroidery

All over Vietnam, its people use embroidery as a form of cultural expression. It was introduced into the northprovinces of Vietnam during the 17th century from China, when originally silk embroidery only used five thread colours – yellow, red, green, violet and blue.

However embroidery is thought to have existed in the village of Van Lam for seven centuries. More than 75% of the population is skilled in the embroidery with lace, due to teachings being passed down through generations. Their work varies from the size of a hand to large wall hangings. Tribes like the Hmong and Dao also use their own unique intricate embroidery and braiding styles to embellish their clothing. The Hmong also use beautiful batik designs to decorate their clothing.

Applique

Applique is used by the Hmong to set apart and identify particular tribes, but was first developed as a way of story telling. Now it has developed into an art form for many communities. This ancient technique involves sewing on fabric shapes by hand to produce decorative patterns and shapes.

If you’d like to find out more about these techniques and get involved in the culture, Colouricious are running a textile trip to Vietnam in November 2015. If you would like to find out more, do not hesitate to visit our website or contact us below.
